Kim Mosby: There was a spring break initiative called "Katrina on the Ground" that was specifically targeted to black college students, realizing that the effort-- those most impacted by Hurricane Katrina, all of the research shows, it was poor African Americans from New Orleans. In response to a black community needing help, the first wave of the relief effort was majority white. And so this spring break initiative grew out of black organizers realizing that there needed to be a way for black college students could come down and be involved so that black college students could help their community. I would have been trapped. When I came down I realized that. I realized if this hit New York that would have been my ass on those buildings. There was no degree of separation-- like this isn't me, this couldn't happen to me. This was very very real. Those people were me. And they would have been me if that had happened somewhere else.
